NC State Plant Science Initiative, Raleigh, NC

Description

The NC State hub will be a hybrid event for up to 50 participants. NAPPN virtual content will run from 1000-1315 EST (0900-1215 CST). Key activities and schedules are provided below:

Registration

If interested, please submit your contact info to this signup form. You will be contacted by Feb 20th to confirm a slot in either the Short Course or Workshop.

Content and Schedule

Tuesday, February 25, 2025: 1400-1700 EST (1300-1600 CST)

Short Course: Embedded Optical and Electronic Systems for High Throughput Plant Phenotyping.

Dr. Michael Kudenov will provide a short course that can serve as a starting point, for introductory users of open-source hardware and software, for deploying embedded optical systems for moderate-scale data collection projects and edge (machine learning/AI) computing applications. Bit depth, image formation, sampling artifacts, camera responsivity, and practical issues related to radiometric transfer are placed into the context of camera selection, computer networking, embedded system compute power, GPIO, cable fabrication, electronic shielding, sensor ruggedization, operating systems, camera software development kits, and programming interfaces. Examples focus on high throughput optical plant phenotyping sensors, deployed in on-line commercial packing operations, to further describe the impact that proper selection of electronics, shielding, and compute methods can have in real-world environments. Key questions answered include “How do I synchronize image collection to external events?” and “How does camera and lens selection impact my data quality?”

Wednesday, Feburary 26, 2025: 1400-1700 EST (1300-1600 CST)

Workshop: Image Analysis and AI.

Workshop: Hands-on Image-based Plant Phenotyping

Drs. Lirong Xiang, Jing Zhang, Frank Bai and Graduate Researcher Evelynn Wilcox will provide a condensed workshop that enables researchers and students to gain hands-on experience in modern plant phenotyping techniques. Participants will learn about drone-based image acquisition, including sensor and platform selection, image processing, and data extraction using QGIS.  The workshop will then cover traditional image analysis methods for quantifying plant traits, using a case study on soybean with iron deficiency and hands-on exercises in Google Colab.  Finally, participants will explore the application of deep learning for automated phenotyping, including CNNs and YOLO. A case study on field-based tomato disease phenotyping will illustrate a complete image analysis pipeline, with hands-on exercises in Google Colab for image classification and object detection. This workshop equips participants with practical skills in image-based technologies for accurate and efficient plant phenotyping.
